Telaprevir is a drug used to treat hepatitis C, it is marketed under the brand names Incivek and Incivo
Telaprevir has been linked to serious side effects including fatal skin reactions. According to it’s manufacturers, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson – “Fatal cases of serious skin reactions have been reported in patients with progressive rash and systemic symptoms who continued to receive the drug combination treatment after a serious skin reaction was identified.”
Other serious side effects of Telaprevir include:
- Birth defects or death of an unborn baby
- Anemia – low red blood cell count
A new black bow warning for Telaprevir was issued on December 19, 2012 by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) that states – Possible side effects on the US labels of Telaprevir, following reports of fatal skin reactions in patients who continued to receive Incivek combination therapy after a serious skin reaction was identified. Two people have died from skin reactions caused by Incivek combination treatment.
