Januvia is marketed by Merck & Co. and was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) on October 17th 2006.  Januvia comes in tablet form and works best in combination with a good diet and exercise.  Sometimes your physician may prescribe Januvia in conjunction with other agents like metformin.

Januvia can have serious side effects including, but not limited to:

  • Pancreatitis – Pancreatitis can be fatal – Stop taking Januvia and phone your physician if you experience – Severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, fast heart rate, fever, sore throat, headache, a skin rash that is red or purple in color and may be blistering and peeling.
  • Kidney Problems – The need for dialysis has been reported
  • Urinating less frequently or not at all
  • Swelling
  • Weight Gain
  • Shortness of Breath
According to the FDA “Eighty-eight post-marketing cases of acute pancreatitis, including two cases of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis in patients using sitagliptin, were reported to the agency between October 2006 and February 2009.”
