Knee replacement (joint arthroplasty) surgery is a fairly common procedure that has increased in popularity in recent years thanks to an array new products.  While some knee implant systems can last up to 15 years, others are not as reliable; there are often complications including loosening and other failures, which sometimes require revision surgery.

Zimmer is a leading manufacturer and seller of artificial orthopedic implants.  Zimmer’s leading knee replacement system is the NexGen Knee Replacement System which since 1994 has been used with success.  However, certain Zimmer NexGen knee replacement systems have been linked to a number of painful side effects.

In March 2010, a group of prominent knee surgeons presented new data relating to the cementless NexGen CR-Flex indicating nearly 9% of patients examined after two years required revision knee surgery and 36% showed signs of loosening of the artificial knee. These failure rates are higher than expected and are believed to be due to design defects in certain Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex components.

Zimmer Knee Replacements – Failures and Other Side Effects

In 2003, Zimmer introduced a knee replacement device called the NexGen CR-Flex.  The company developed two versions of the NexGen CR—a cemented version and a cementless version.  The cemented version of the knee implant device uses an adhesive to connect the thighbone to the device, while the cementless version bonds to the knee through natural bone ingrowth.  While the NexGen CR was purported to provide recipients with a greater range of motion than other knee replacement devices on the market, there has been a high occurrence of failure in the cementless version of the NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral component.

In 2006, Dr. Richard Berger started to notice that the cementless version of the NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral component was not fusing properly with the thigh bone in many of his patients, which caused pain in the recipient.  He brought the issue to Zimmer, who has subsequently blamed the issue on Dr. Berger’s ability as a surgeon.  Though industry standards dictate that knee replacements last around 15 years, a study delivered by Dr. Berger and one of his colleagues to a national conference of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in 2010 showed that the cementless version of the NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral component was failing at a rate much higher than the industry average.

On July 29, 2010 Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) issued a letter to Zimmer Holdings regarding problems with some of the Zimmer NexGen knee implant systems, indicating that the Senate Finance Committee was investigating Zimmer’s handling of concerns raised by consultants and contractors regarding the safety of its products.
