NuvaRing is made of a flexible plastic that is inserted into the vagina for a three-week period, and removed from the vagina for a one week period.  During the week that NuvaRing is not in the vagina, the user may experience a menstrual cycle.

NuvaRing works by releasing a low dose of progestin and estrogen directly into the body, which results in users receiving a much higher dose of hormones than what is generally delivered by oral birth control pills.

NuvaRing is manufactured by Merck & Co., was first introduced in Europe in early 2001 and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) later in the same year.

NuvaRing can have serious side effects, studies show adverse events including -

Stroke, Heart Attack, Blood Clots, Deep Vein Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism, High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease, Cancer of Reproductive Organs and breasts, Gallbladder Disease, Liver Tumors, Lipid Metabolism and Inflammation of the Pancreas, Foreign Object Sensation, Sexual Problems, Expulsion, Vaginitis, Headaches, Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, Leukorrhea, Sinusitis and Weight Gain.

Lawsuits:  In 2008 a lawsuit was filled against Merck (the manufacturer of NuvaRing), NuvaRings distributors and it’s makers.  Alleging that companies concealed the health risks associated with using NuvaRing, resulting in the death of the plaintiff’s wife.  There have been over 730 lawsuits filed in state and federal courts, although, the company denies the allegations.
