NuvaRing Birth Control Side Effects
NuvaRing is a non oral hormonal contraception. NuvaRing is a small ring that is inserted into the vagina monthly to prevent pregnancy.
NuvaRing contains estrogen and progestin, like many birth control pills. The hormones in the NuvaRing prevent the ovaries from producing mature eggs. NuvaRing then thickens a woman’s cervical mucas, which in turn blocks sperm from joining the egg. NuvaRing is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
There are serious side effects of the non oral hormonal contraceptive NuvaRing:
- Heart Attack
- Vaginal infections, irritations, and/or secretion
- Headaches
- Stroke
- Blood clots in the legs, lungs, heart or brain
NuvaRing risks may increase if you:
- Are over 35 years of age
- Are overweight
- Have inherited blood clotting disorders
- Smoke
- Have high blood pressure
- Have high cholesterol
- Have diabetes
Contact your health care provider if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Achy soreness in your legs
- Pain in your abdomen and/or chest
- Trouble breathing
- A lump in your breast
- A sudden headache that is different or worse than your usual headache
- If you are seeing flashing, bright lines, usually before a very bad headache
- If you have yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Change in menstrual cycle
Do not use NuvaRing if you are/have:
- Pregnant
- Certain cancers
- On bed rest
- Organ transplant complications
- lupus
- Migrains
NuvaRing does not prevent against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.
