GranuFlo For Dialysis Patients Can Be A Dangerous Drug

GranuFlo Attorney / GranuFlo Lawyers / The Maher Law Firm / Frank EidsonGranuFlo is one part of a three part mixture used in dialysis

The mixture is called dialysate, it combines ultra-pure water, bicarbonate concentrate, and acid concentrate.  Dialysate is used during dialysis.  Dialysis is a process in which toxic waste is removed from the blood system, (essentially replacing the kidneys function) by neutralizing acids that build up in the blood.

GranuFlo, contains acetic acid plus sodium acetate, (sodium diacetate) that are converted by a patients body into bicarbonate.  Bicarbonate then passes through the membrane of the artificial kidney and into the patients blood to remove toxic waist from the blood system.

GranuFlo contains more bicarbonate than other brands of the drug, which can result in a bicarbonate overdose.  GranuFlo, if used incorrectly, can cause serious adverse events, including, but not limited to:

  • Cardiac Arrest Fatalities
  • Hypo-tension
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Heart Problems
  • Cardiopulmonary Arrest
  • Myocardial Infarction
  • Heart Attack
  • Metabolic Alkalosis
  • Stroke
  • Death

When dialysates are mixed incorrectly, GranuFlo becomes a dangerous drug.  GranuFlo is not inherently dangerous however, it only becomes dangerous as a result of human error.

Since GranuFlo uses sodium diacetate which doubles the amount of acetate in dialysate compared to formulations made with acetic acid, GranuFlo’s total “buffer” level is higher than the bicarbonate level delivered from the bicarbonate concentrate.

Until recently, almost all dialysis care professionals – as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CMS surveyors – did not consider the effects of acetate in the acid concentrate when prescribing bicarbonate levels, which can result in serious adverse events.
