NuvaRing is a drug known as a 3rd-generation contraceptive.
NuvaRing was intended to reduce the risk of unwanted side effects among its users, by employing a new combination of hormones. In contrast, the hormones (which include a synthetic progestin known as desogestrel) are estimated to have doubled the risk of blood clots and stroke in most users.
Public Citizen – a non-profit consumer advocacy group – has petitioned the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to ban all 3rd generation contraceptives, (which includes NuvaRing) due to the high risk factors. The FDA has not yet acted.
