Compounding pharmacies make custom medications for patients in response to a prescription, which are then overseen by the state boards of pharmacy.

Fueled by the tainted spinal injection, manufactured by the NECC – New England Compounding Center, and resulting in a fungal meningitis outbreak;  causing the deaths of 39 people and affecting 620.  State regulators are seeking action from the FDA to regulate compounding pharmacies, and asking the FDA for better communication and training

“The federal government should establish a federal definition of manufacturer and compounding pharmacy, the most important task is defining the exceptions.” said Mark Johnston, executive director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy.
