Bone grafting is a surgical procedure in which bone is replaced to help in the repair of bone fractures.  Infuse bone graft was manufactured to help aid in the replacement of bone.

Infuse is a product that consists of two parts, a protein and a natural sponge.  The protein (rhBMP-2) is a genetically engineered version of a protein that the body naturally produces to help in bone growth and healing.  The natural sponge is made from bovine type 1 collagen.  The sponge releases the rhBMP-2 over time to aid in new bone growth.  The sponge is then absorbed and replaced by bone.

Infuse Bone Graft System is manufactured by Medtronic and was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2002 for only one very specific type of spinal surgery – An anterior approach lumbar fusion of one level of the spine between the L5 and S1 vertebrae.

Infuse has reportedly been used for off-label (non-FDA approved) surgeries that have resulted in the pain and suffering and sometimes death of the patients involved.

Medtronic has been accused of making misleading statements about Infuse and has agreed to settle a shareholder lawsuit for $85 million.  The lawsuit claims that Medtronic failed to disclose that 85.2% of Infuse sales depended on off-label uses.  Also, Medtronic has been accused of falsifying medical trials to make is seem as if proper use of the device is safe when studies have shown an increased risk of cancer with the use of Infuse Bone Graft.
