Actos is a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes.  In June of 2011, Germany and France banned Actos because studies showed that long term use of the drug increase the risk of bladder cancer by 40%.  The same month, the US Food and Drug Administration also issued an alert regarding the dangerous side effects of Actos.

In April 2012, Health Canada also issued their own warnings after a study there showed an even greater than 40% risk of Actos leading to bladder cancer.

On May 31, 2012, the British Medical Journal published a study from McGill University in Montreal which shows the long term use of Actos increases the risk of bladder cancer by up to 83%.

The McGill study also offered an explanation of the high risk of bladder cancer for patients taking Actos.  The study suggest that Actos forms crystal in the bladder that continuously cause irritation and the chronic irritation can lead to the cancer.  However, the researchers at McGill University say more research will be needed to establish the theory.

Actos patients that have suffered a bladder cancer or heart attack side effects are urged to speak with an attorney regarding their legal options.  The manufactures of Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, could be facing 10,000 lawsuits because of  serious Actos side effects.
