Pfizer Pays $14.5 Million Over Illegal Marketing Charges

Recently accused of illegally marketing the drug, Detrol, the world’s biggest drug maker, Pfizer, has agreed to pay the U.S. government $14.5 million to settle the charges, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston. Pfizer allegedly marketed their overactive bladder drug, Detrol, for the treatment of men with enlarged prostates and other related conditions, including bladder obstruction. However, Detrol had only been approved by the FDA for the treatment of frequent urination, sudden urges to go and bladder leaks. The $14.5 million will be divided among state Medicaid programs and the federal government. Also, the Whistleblowers responsible for reporting the illegal marketing activity will receive a portion of the payout, under the provisions of the False Claims Act.
