Juries Find Accutane Can Cause IBD

Kamie Kendall was awarded $10.5 million by a jury after hearing about her experiences with Accutane and the side effect it caused– inflammatory bowel disease, a condition that lead to the removal of her colon.

Yet the Appellate Division of the New Jersey Superior Court vacated the judgment, and a retrial was set so that Roche could “provide quantitative information to the jury relating to the number of Accutane users and the background rate of IBD, to cast light on Roche’s efforts to monitor the risk of harm.”

Just this April, a jury awarded $2million to a plaintiff with a similar case, and last year $25 million was award to another plaintiff. The juries in these cases concluded that Accuntane can cause IBD and that the warnings of this side effect were not sufficient.
