College Freshman on Yaz Dies of Caridac Arrest

An 18-year-old college freshman from North Carolina died suddenly of cardiac arrest after taking YAZ birth control pills to help with acne.  Now her family has filed a lawsuit against the Bayer, makers of Yaz.

“I can only hope that by publicizing what happened to Michelle, I can keep another family from having to go through this,” her mother said to Nine MSBC.

The lawsuit, like so many others facing Bayer, suggests that they failed to warn doctors and patients of the increased risk of serious side effects. Studies show that users of Yaz have greater chances of developing side effects than users of earlier-generation contraceptives.  Yet, Yaz, with its flashy marketing campaign, continues to be the best selling birth control pill.
