In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration advised consumers to discontinue use of three nasally administered versions of Zicam: Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size.  The alert, and subsequent recall, was due to findings that these nasally administered versions caused anosmia.

Zicam and Anosmia

The active ingredient in Zicam is the diluted element zinc.  While some studies have supported the value of zinc in reducing the symptoms of the common cold, it’s also poses a significant health risk – anosmia.

Anosmia results in the total loss of smell and a partial loss of taste.  In 2006, Matrixx (without admitting fault) paid $12 million to settle 340 lawsuits from Zicam users who said the product destroyed their sense of smell.

Despite these early warnings, nasally-administered Zicam was available for three more years before the FDA took action.  During this time, thousands of Zicam users may have been affected.

If you have taken Zicam and experienced anosmia, contact RxRecall.com today.  You may be entitled to compensation for your suffering.  Our Zicam side effects lawyers can explain your legal options.  An experienced Zicam attorney can help.  Don’t delay.

Zicam FDA Warning and Recall

On June 16, 2009, the FDA advised consumers to discontinue use of nasally administered versions of Zicam.  The three affected Zicam products were:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size

The FDA indicated that it had received reports of a loss of smell from approximately 130 Zicam users since 1999.  The FDA expressed concern that the loss of smell caused by Zicam use may be permanent, while the condition for which Zicam products are marketed – the common cold – typically resolves on its own without lasting problems.  Matrixx stated that it had received an additional 800 reports of anosmia.

Despite this, Matrixx initially refused to recall the products.  After an FDA warning letter, the company relented and on June 24 it recalled the affected Zicam products.
